Martial joined the island club after leaving the Auvergne-based outfit AS Montferrand. He received his first call up to the senior squad for their match against Montpellier on 13 March 2009. He made his professional debut in that match coming on as a late match substitute in a 1–0 victory.[1] Martial made his first professional start two weeks later in a 1–2 defeat at home against Metz. He was officially promoted to the senior team for the 2009–10 season and assigned the number 14 shirt. Martial was given a more significant role in the team appearing in his first match on 18 August 2009 in a 6–1 demolition of Nîmes. He made his first start of the season three days later playing the entire match in a 0–1 loss to Metz. Martial consistently appeared for the rest of the 2009 campaign appearing as a starter domestically and also playing with the France under-19 team internationally.
On 2 August 2010, Bastia confirmed that the player would be joining Ligue 1 club Stade Brest on loan for the entire 2010–11 Ligue 1 season.
